During the later Byzantine period, a basilica was constructed using the northern wall area of the ancient gate in Nicaea. The apse and mosaics give insight into the worship space.
Basilica at the North Gate
The Ancient road aligns mainly with the current road, but the gate is preserved just east of the road. The main gate provides entry for carriages and the transportation of animals. On the sides are pedestrian walkways. The central area was elevated in the latter Byzantine times. On both sides of the main walkway on the inside of the gate lies a basilica. The apse on the east and the mosaic entry on the west are still visible.
